Terner Center: Postdoctoral Scholars

The Terner Center is seeking 3 postdoctoral scholars to support research projects related to land use, housing supply, homelessness and climate policy. These full-time positions are ideal for recent PhD graduates in Urban Planning, Public Policy, Sociology, Public Health, Climate or Environmental Science, or other related fields who are passionate about housing and who want to build their expertise in policy-relevant research.

We are recruiting in three areas:

· Homelessness and affordable housing, with a specific focus on funding permanent supportive housing and homelessness services through Medicaid waivers;

· Zoning, land use, housing supply and/or finance; and

· The linkages between housing and climate policy, including aligning California’s housing supply and climate mitigation policies, building decarbonization, and climate resilience.

The post-docs will be working with faculty and professional research staff at the Terner Center on a wide range of projects.  Candidates must have a PhD in a relevant field completed by August 1, 2024 or earlier.  The ideal candidates will have a strong background in quantitative or qualitative methods (or both), have knowledge of US and/or California housing policy, and be interested in being part of a team that seeks to conduct applied research that directly informs local, state and federal housing policy.

Applications are open to all qualified candidates, but we especially encourage applications from women, people of color, and those from other backgrounds underrepresented in housing research. Postdocs are expected to work at least 2–3 days a week at the Terner Center offices in downtown Oakland, and will be given funding to attend academic and professional conferences as well as time to work on independent research projects.
