The Center for Poverty & Inequality Research (CPIR) at UC Davis in collaboration with Howard University, Morehouse College and Spelman College, hosts the UCD-SPREE program, which introduces undergraduates from these institutions to poverty and social inequality research in the social sciences and helps them develop knowledge and skills for graduate school.

During their first summer in the program, UCD-SPREE students will participate in remotely delivered professional development activities with CPIR faculty and graduate students as well as graduate school preparation programing sponsored and delivered by the Office of Graduate Studies (see example calendar from summer 2022). Students selected to participate in the first-year program will receive $500 stipends to support their participation in the online workshops and seminars.

Following the first summer, UCD-SPREE participants will be eligible to apply to become members of the second-year cohort. Second-year students will remotely join their faculty mentors’ research groups, continuing to work in an intensive mentored research assistant capacity through the following summer. Second-year students will also be invited to participate in remote professional development activities. Second-year students will receive $3,000 to support their participation in UCD-SPREE and are eligible for graduate school application, admission, and fellowship incentives via the UC-HBCU initiative.

Eligibility
– Students currently in their freshman and sophomore years
– Economics student from Howard University
– Sociology students from Morehouse College
– Sociology students from Spelman College

Program will begin on June 29, 2023 and end on July 28, 2023.
